TTFC Open Epee
July 17th we hosted an epee competition. Congratulations to Reilly for his second place finish. Thank you to everyone who attended.
Fencers are always welcome to stop in during events at the club even if they don’t compete. This can be a time to meet other fencers or help with directing or score keeping. This particular event had a fun impromptu foil round robin after the epee finals!

At the FIE (International) level of fencing a portion of the mask bib has been target in foil. In the US this target will be used at some national level competitions. The bib will NOT be target at any Local (Divisional) event, including Junior Olympic and Summer National qualifying events or NCAA Foil events in the 2011-2012 Season.

In late June we will have an “open house” night leading up to a beginner class in July. If you have a friend, coworker, or classmate that’s always been interested in fencing here is your chance to introduce them to the sport. More details will be posted later.

Fencing Videos

In the not to recent past fencing footage was incredibly difficult to come across. Fortunately the internet has made a remarkable amount of videos available. Watching clips from any level of competition can be a great training benefit by both looking for actions to try and practicing referring.

YouTube is rich with fencing videos, but as with most things on the internet there are good and bad.

The FIE has been regularly uploading videos to their YouTube account, http://www.youtube.com/user/FIEvideo. Included in their last uploads are timing tests. It is interesting to see how adjusting the lockout time on the machine by a few milliseconds could change the course of a bout. Another video channel to follow would be www.cyrusofchaos.com/. He frequently posts bouts from recent events and an extensive archive.

The recent NCAA fencing championships were broadcast live online with the finals being accompanied by a knowledgeable commentator. Hopefully we will see more of these broadcasts made available both live and archived.

2010 Fencing Rule Book
An updated Fencing Rule Book was published by the USFA last year. Every fencer should be familiar with this document. It can be downloaded as a PDF file from www.usfencing.org under the “Resources —Documents” section.
If you would like a printed copy I will be organizing a group order to save on printing costs. More details will be posted at the club shortly.

New Curtains
My parents have always been supportive of my fencing, and they continue to be so. I would like to thank them for their help in the custom creation and installation of the new curtains. Hopefully this will help block out the distracting afternoon sun while letting more light in when it is needed.

The website askFRED.net can be confusing to navigate at first. The map view offers a good overview of competitions in the region, but may not be complete. You should also browse by divisions occasionally.

Fencing tournaments follow a variety of formats. Most of they are individual competitions with periodic team events.

The smaller events will feature one weapon and will often be open, meaning most anyone who fences that weapon can register.

Larger events may limit registration by age, gender, or rating held. For example a “Division III Foil” event would be open to foil fencers rated “D” or below and a “Junior Epee” event would be open to Epee fencers under the age of 19. These may also require USA Fencing membership. Please ask if you want more information or check our website.

Why the name change?

This was not an easy decision to make, a lot of factors went into it. Ultimately the main factor was visibility. While a “Salle d’Armes” conjures up visions of great fencing halls to those who know the term, it doesn’t mean much to those unfamiliar with the sport. Those are the people we are trying to attract to fencing. Another reason was to promote a regional identity. This would be a way to show where we are from and include both our New York and Pennsylvania presence.

Welcome to the Twin Tiers Fencing Club!
